OHSOTO’KINO: PiQSiQ on Tradition and Innovation
Recipients of NMC’s OHSOTO’KINO Recording Bursary, PiQSiQ, discuss their northern upbringing, finding inspiration, and their contemporary adaptation of Inuit throat singing with David McLeod, Chair of NMC’s National Indigenous Programming Advisory Committee.
PIQSIQ’s Inuksuk Mackay and Tiffany Ayalik grew up in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Inspired by the haunting northern beauty, the sisters blend their ancient traditional form with contemporary technology to create haunting soundscapes and improvisational compositions that change with every show. In 2023, they received studio time at Studio Bell to record a commercial album. Stay tuned for the release of this special project!
With support from TD, National Music Centre (NMC) is creating more opportunities for Indigenous artists through the OHSOTO’KINO initiative. OHSOTO’KINO is an Indigenous programming initiative focusing on three elements: creation of new music in NMC’s recording studios, artist development through a music incubator program, and exhibitions via the annually updated Speak Up! gallery.

Honestly I love the sound of the Saxophone. I hated the sound that the clarinet made! You have to love the sound of the instrument to play it, Bottom Line! Honestly the Saxophone is definitely better. I love the sounds it makes!

"Remember kids, don't run while you oboe." That would explain the lack of oboes in marching bands, and why the sarrousaphone never caught on.

Without a doubt, saxophonists have always been cooler than clarinetists. But listen to the great blend with the Glenn Miller sax section, clarinet lead plus two alto and two tenor saxophones. The clarinet really adds a nice sparkle on top.

The first time I played the oboe my brain told me it was a Bb instrument because it’s sound is so different from what I’m used to. Then I played it with strings and it sounded closer to the string players’ notes when I played an octave above them than in the same octave.

Just a note: Unlike in other reed instruments, if the tune is a little off on your oboe, you do not move the reed, but you adjust your embouchure and how much of the reed you have in your mouth.

This ‘Andante un poco Adagio’ in F-major [forming the Middle movement of the Klavier Sonata in C, K.309] was meant to be a ‘musical portrait’ of Rosa Cannabich the 13-year old daughter of Christian Cannabich the conductor of the famous Mannheim Orchestra - to whom M. gave keyboard lessons & was composed between 31 October through 3 November 1777 at a time when M. & his mother were living with the Cannabichs in Mannheim -‘the Andante will give Roserl the most trouble because it must be played at the correct tempo and all of the expressive dynamic markings must be play’d precisely as I have written them-it is meant to be a portrait of her-and it really is a fact-she is EXACTLY like the Andante !’ Thus M. wrote to his father Leopold pacing the floor with worry (his customary psychological habit) back home in Salzburg - who immediately wrote back - ‘My son, your latest Sonata in C is charming but in a few places, I don’t know, there seems something fake or contrived or cliched about it - however not so glaringly-so that it ruins its total effect on the Ear for which your own good Taste has managed to hide …’

You need to optimize your channel and do video SEO to reach your target audience. Otherwise, if you upload videos to your channel throughout the year, none of your videos will go viral. If your channel is a bit optimized and the videos are SEO then your channel will rank very fast and your channel will grow. As a professional digital marketer, I want to help you.
